What Are Manufacturer Certifications?

Roofing Certification Programs: GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed
GAF Certified™ and GAF Certified Plus™
GAF's certification ladder has three steps: GAF Certified™, GAF Certified Plus™, and GAF Master Elite®. GAF Certified contractors can offer the GAF System Plus Limited Warranty on a qualifying GAF roofing system (GAF Lifetime Shingles plus at least 3 qualifying GAF accessories). It keeps the same coverage as GAF's standard system warranty but extends the non-prorated period from 10 years to 50 years and includes tear-off and disposal when needed. It does not cover workmanship.
GAF Certified Plus and Master Elite contractors can also offer the GAF Silver Pledge™ Limited Warranty, which adds 10 years of GAF-backed coverage for installation (misapplication) errors.
GAF Master Elite
GAF's top-tier certification, held by only about 2% of roofing contractors nationwide. Requirements include:
- Licensed, insured, and in good standing
- Properly trained installers
- Commitment to ongoing education
- Proven reputation in the community
Benefits for homeowners: Access to the GAF Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty, available only through Master Elite contractors - 50 years of non-prorated material coverage plus GAF-backed misapplication (workmanship) coverage for 25 or 30 years, depending on the shingle.
Owens Corning Preferred Contractor
Owens Corning's professional contractor network. Requirements include:

Why Certifications Matter
Enhanced Warranties
This is the primary practical benefit. Standard shingle warranties cover only manufacturing defects - not installation problems. Some enhanced warranties, such as GAF's Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge, add manufacturer-backed workmanship coverage, meaning if the roof fails due to installation issues, the warranty still applies. Others, such as GAF System Plus, extend material coverage but leave workmanship to the contractor's own warranty.
A 50-year shingle warranty means nothing if improper installation causes failure in year 5. Ask any contractor which warranty covers workmanship on your roof - the manufacturer's or their own - and get it in writing.
Installation Quality
Training requirements ensure contractors know proper techniques for the specific products they're installing. Different shingles have different requirements - fastener patterns, alignment, accessory products. Certified contractors are trained on these specifics.
Accountability
Manufacturers maintain oversight of certified contractors. Poor performance can result in losing certification. This creates incentive for contractors to maintain quality - their certification status is valuable.
